Can UPI work without mobile data?

Sometimes. India’s *99# USSD service can provide a bank menu when mobile internet is unavailable. Your phone still needs cellular service, your bank must support the route, and your bank—not LimePayX—authorizes the payment.

Mobile data off is different from no network. *99# uses a mobile operator’s USSD service to reach the bank. If you have no usable cellular service, the session cannot connect. This is also different from a regulatory “offline payment” that takes effect without internet or telecom connectivity.

01 / BEFORE YOU START

What you need for UPI when mobile data is off

Turning off mobile data stops ordinary internet access; it does not turn off the cellular network. A *99# session depends on the bank, mobile operator, registered phone number, and service availability.

  • Cellular service: your phone must be able to place the USSD request. Airplane mode or no signal will prevent the session.
  • Bank-registered mobile number: use the SIM associated with your bank account and its mobile banking service.
  • Bank support and readiness: your bank and account must be eligible for the particular *99# action. Menu options and prerequisites vary.
  • A compatible phone and SIM setup: dual-SIM, roaming, handset, and carrier behavior can affect whether the request reaches the bank.

NPCI describes *99# as a USSD-based mobile banking service that can work without internet. That does not mean it works with no mobile network at all. Check your bank’s current instructions before relying on it.

02 / THE BANK ROUTE

How to use the *99# USSD payment route

The precise screens depend on your bank. Treat these as general preparation, not a substitute for the bank’s current directions.

  1. 1
Check the registered SIM and signal.

Make sure the SIM linked to your bank is active and the phone has cellular service. Mobile data can be switched off.

  2. 2
Start the bank’s official USSD session.

Use the Phone app and follow your bank’s supported *99# instructions. Menus can change, so read each prompt carefully.

  3. 3
Review the payee and amount in the bank flow.

Compare the bank-displayed details with the person or merchant you intend to pay. Do not rely on a QR display name alone.

  4. 4
Authorize only in the official bank prompt.

Enter your UPI PIN only into the bank’s official authorization screen. Never give it to LimePayX, a merchant, or a support agent.

  5. 5
Confirm the result in official records.

Check your bank’s transaction history and, for a purchase, the merchant’s order status. If the result is uncertain, do not pay again until you check whether the first attempt was debited.

03 / THE LIMEPAYX APP

How the LimePayX payments app works

LimePayX is an Android UPI payments app by One Touch Pvt Ltd. It reads supported QR payment details and automates recognized steps in selected bank-supported *99# flows when mobile data is unavailable. You review the recipient and amount, and authorize the payment in the bank’s official prompt.

The app does

Read supported QR details, prepare a payment, and assist with selected bank-flow steps.

Your bank controls

Account eligibility, menu options, authentication, authorization, processing, and the official transaction record.

It does not promise

Every bank, SIM, carrier, QR, merchant checkout, or payment will work. A decoded QR is not proof that a payment succeeded.

LimePayX currently lists Airtel, Vi, and BSNL for its supported app route; Jio is not supported by that route. This is a LimePayX compatibility statement, not a claim that NPCI’s service has the same carrier limits. Check the current compatibility notes before relying on the app.

04 / DIFFERENT MEANINGS OF “OFFLINE”

USSD, UPI Lite, and true offline payments are not the same

RouteWhat it usesWhat to remember
*99# USSDCellular network session to a bankMobile data may be off; cellular service is still needed.
UPI Lite / Lite XA pre-enabled balance in a participating appSeparate products with their own setup, availability, and rules. LimePayX does not provide them.
RBI offline payment frameworkPayment methods designed to take effect without internet or telecom connectivityA distinct category governed by RBI’s framework and offered by authorized participants.

Calling all three “offline UPI” can cause confusion. Before paying, identify the exact route, required connection, and provider that handles authorization.

05 / PAYMENT SAFETY

If the bank prompt fails or the result looks unclear

A USSD error, timeout, or app screen does not always tell you whether money moved. Check the bank’s official history and contact the bank through a number or support path from its official website or app. For a shop purchase, ask the merchant to check the order using its payment provider.

Never share your UPI PIN or OTP.Enter a UPI PIN only in the bank’s official authorization prompt. A person or app should never ask you to reveal it to receive money.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

UPI without mobile data: FAQs

Can the LimePayX payments app make a UPI payment with mobile data turned off?

Some bank-supported *99# USSD flows may work when mobile data is off, provided cellular service and bank support are available. A regular UPI app that needs an internet connection may not work. Check the bank’s current guidance.

Can I use *99# in airplane mode?

No. Airplane mode normally disables cellular service, which USSD needs to reach the bank. Turn off airplane mode and wait for cellular service before trying again.

Does “UPI without internet” mean there is no network connection?

No. In the *99# case, “without internet” means mobile data is not needed for that USSD interaction. The phone still communicates over a cellular network. RBI’s offline-payment definition is different.

Will LimePayX work with every bank, QR, and carrier?

No. The supported app route depends on the bank, account, registered SIM, carrier, device, QR details, and current service availability. Check LimePayX’s compatibility notes and the bank’s own instructions.

How can I tell if an uncertain payment succeeded?

Check the bank’s official transaction history and ask the merchant to verify its order. Do not rely on a timeout or a LimePayX message alone, and do not retry until you have checked whether the first attempt was debited.
